teeth whitening FAQs

Below are some commonly asked questions about our in-office teeth whitening services, our Smile Pop teeth whitening products, and teeth whitening in general.

in-office whitening FAQs

Is your bleach strong?

Our bleach is stronger than anything that can be sold over-the-counter or sold in at-home treatments. The teeth whitening gel we use for our in-office teeth whitening treatments is custom-made and compounded in a pharmacy, formulated to be strong enough to get amazing results without the sensitivity

What is the difference between the 30-minute vs. 60-minute teeth whitening treatment?

  • Our Smile Pop Premium White teeth bleaching service has two (2) applications of our special formulated teeth bleaching gel applied under our laser light accelerator for a total of 30 minutes.
  • Our Smile Pop VIP White teeth bleaching service has four (4) applications of our special formulated teeth bleaching gel applied under our laser light accelerator for a total of 60 minutes. This 60 minute experience is our biggest boost of white and is purposefully designed for deep relaxation, having options of aromatherapy, sound meditation, and more.

How much does it cost?

Our Smile Pop Premium White in-office teeth bleaching is $325 for 30 minutes. Our Smile Pop VIP White in-office teeth bleaching is $525 for 60 minutes.

How soon before I see the results?

Patients can expect to see a brighter smile immediately after an in-office treatment, a difference of up to 8 shades. However, severe stains may take longer and multiple treatments to fully resolve. To maintain results, we recommend to continue whitening at home a couple days per week using our Smile Pop teeth whitening product line.

How long will my teeth stay white for?

You’ll want to treat your teeth like a white T-shirt for the next 48 hours after an in-office teeth whitening as your teeth are most susceptible to picking up staining. To maintain your desired teeth whiteness, we recommend our at-home teeth whitening products at least two times per week.

How will I know how much my teeth whiten?

At Smile Pop, we use the VITA Bleachedguide 3D-MASTER shade guide and assess the three parameters of  tooth color: brightness (value), chroma (saturation) and hue (color). The VITA Bleachedguide 3D-MASTER is the globally recognized standard for shade level assessment and is therefore recommended for every dental professional.

How can I ✨maximize✨ the whitening result I can get from an in-office treatment?

If you start whitening your teeth at home about 10 days prior to an in-office treatment, you’ll start to open the pores of your teeth and allow our stronger bleach to penetrate even deeper into the stains of your teeth. This will allow light to reflect even brighter and give the appearance of whiter teeth.

Also, while not always needed, if you can coordinate a teeth cleaning prior to the in-office teeth whitening treatment, you’ll allow the bleach to penetrate the pores of the teeth deeper, too.

How soon can I eat after a treatment?

You can eat right away, but we recommend avoiding dark-staining foods and drinks for 48 hours after an in-office teeth whitening treatment as your teeth are most susceptible to picking up staining while the pores of the teeth are open. It takes about 48 hours for those pores to seal and be less susceptible to staining.

Will my teeth hurt after the whitening?

At Smile Pop, we use an effective, low sensitivity concentration of bleach to minimize any sensitivity. While rare with our treatment, mild sensitivity to hot or cold liquids may occur and usually resolves within 1-2 days. If sensitivity persists, take two anti-inflammatory medicines like Advil (200 mg) with a pain reducing acetaminophen medicine like Tylenol (500 mg).

I've done Zoom whitening before and my teeth hurt like hell. Will this be the same?

Zoom whitening treatments dehydrate your teeth, thus causing a lot of sensitivity. Our Smile Pop bleach  is custom-made and compounded in a pharmacy, formulated to be strong enough to get amazing results without the sensitivity.

I have sensitive teeth - will my teeth hurt after the in-office whitening?

A Smile Pop, we use an effective, low-sensitivity teeth bleaching formula to minimize dehydration of the teeth (which is what contributes to the sensitivity). The bleach is also hand painted onto each individual tooth to minimize gum irritation.

Will my teeth whiten?

Whitening does not work on all teeth as some teeth may be discolored for a variety of reasons – some in your control and others as a result of injury or illness. Therefore, it’s important to check with your doctor to determine the right procedure for your teeth. For example, yellowed teeth typically bleach well while brown teeth may not respond as well and teeth with gray tones may not bleach at all.
Teeth that are dark gray due to tetracycline staining will not whiten. See an example picture of tetracycline stained teeth below:
Some people have white spot lesions on their teeth called “decalcifications.” These white spots will initially stand out and be very prominent after a after a bleaching treatment. This will normalize in about 48 hours after the treatment. See an example picture of white spot lesions below:

How many shades will I go up?

Patients can expect to see a brighter smile immediately after an in-office treatment, a difference of up to 8 shades. However, severe stains may take longer and multiple treatments to fully resolve.  You can continue to whiten at home after an in-office treatment to raise your baseline white even more – consider using these teeth whitening products.

I have white spots on my teeth - will these whiten?

White spot lesions, known as decalcifications, are areas of tooth enamel where the minerals are lacking. Because the composition of the enamel is different than other areas of your teeth, these white spot lesions will not whiten the same.
Typically after a whitening treatment, these white spots will initially really stand out and be very prominent until they normalize with your saliva about 48 hours after the treatment. See an example picture of white spot lesions below:

To try get rid of white spot lesions, you need to whiten your teeth like crazy to raise your baseline white and then have your general dentist do a procedure called “ICON Resin Infiltration” to cover them. A more invasion alternative is to cover them with dental veneers or bondings.

I have veneers - will these whiten?

Whitening does not work the same on dental appliances like caps, veneers, crowns, or fillings, however the whitening gel will break down some surface staining. It’s highly likely that bleaching your teeth will not be effective if the primary cause for discoloration is medication or trauma.

I have dental bondings - will these whiten?

Whitening does not work the same on dental appliances like caps, veneers, crowns, or fillings, however the whitening gel will break down some surface staining. It’s highly likely that bleaching your teeth will not be effective if the primary cause for discoloration is medication or trauma.

How many in-office treatments do I need?

Patients can expect to see a brighter smile immediately after one in-office treatment, a difference of up to 8 shades. To get our biggest boost of white, we recommend the Smile Pop VIP White service for 60 minutes.

BONUS TIP: If you start whitening your teeth at home about 10 days prior to an in-office treatment, you’ll start to open the pores of your teeth and allow our in-office bleach to penetrate even deeper into the stains of your teeth. This will allow light to reflect even brighter and give the appearance of whiter teeth. You can use a product like this.

Also, while not always needed, if you can coordinate a teeth cleaning prior to the in-office teeth whitening treatment, you’ll allow the bleach to penetrate the pores of the teeth deeper, too.

How many bleach applications am I paying for?

Our 30 minute Smile Pop Premium White treatment includes two (2) applications of bleaching gel under our laser light. Our 60 minute Smile Pop VIP White treatment includes four (4) applications of bleaching gel under our laser light.

When can I whiten again after my in-office teeth whitening treatment?

We recommended waiting 48 hours before using an at-home teeth whitening product to help maintain the result. You can get an in-office teeth whitening every month. Dr. Courtney recommends getting a treatment before an important life event, milestone, or vacation. When you LOOK good, you FEEL good!

Do you use a laser?

Yes, we use a laser light for both our 30 minute and 60 minute in-office teeth whitening treatments.

Does my insurance cover teeth whitening?

Insurance does not typically cover teeth whitening services, however you can use your FSA (flex spending accounts) or HSA (health savings accounts) on it.

Should I get my teeth cleaned before I do the whitening?

Cleaner teeth respond better to teeth whitening as it allows the bleaching gel to better penetrate the pores of the teeth. We say go for it!

Should I do the in-office treatment or take home products?

In-office teeth whitening bleaches are much stronger than the take-home products because they have more peroxide in the solution. In-office teeth whitening treatments can change the color of your teeth faster than the at-home products.

How soon before my wedding should I whiten?

We recommend doing an in-office teeth whitening 10 days before the big day and continue at-home treatments leading up to the big day.

I'm getting veneers/bondings soon. How soon before should I whiten?

We recommend doing an in-office treatment 10 days before your dental restorations to make sure your teeth have whitened enough. This way, your dentist can get the best, most natural color match.

I have attachments on my teeth. Can I get an in-office teeth whitening treatment?

We recommend holding off on our in-office teeth bleaching treatments until those attachments are all off. Instead, we recommend using our Smile Pop Premium Teeth Whitening Gel Syringes 1-2 times per week to improve your whiteness.

I really want to get white teeth. What product do you recommend?

You will get the most amount of whitening using our whitening kit or gel syringes because these gels have a higher concentration of bleach and have to be removed off the teeth after 15 minutes.
Our pens and aligner foam have a lower dose of bleach, which allows you to safely apply it several times per day without having to remove it, but it will take longer to reach your desired whiteness vs. our gel syringes (that have to be removed after 15 minutes).
If you’re looking to raise your whiteness and maximize your result as quickly as possible, with a little bit more effort, use our gels daily until your desired whiteness is reached and then use the gels 1-2 times per week to maintain it.
If you’re looking for an easy on-the-go gradual white without much fuss, use our pens several times per day and apply our foam in your clear aligners or retainers nightly.

What is your strongest whitening product?

✨ Our Smile Pop Premium Teeth Whitening Kits have the highest concentration of bleach and will get you the fastest result. Must be removed off teeth after 15 minutes.
✨ Our Smile Pop Premium Teeth Whitening Gel Syringes have the second highest concentration of bleach. Must be removed off teeth after 15 minutes.
✨ Our Smile Pop Teeth Whitening Pens are recommended for simple, daily maintenance and has the third highest concentration of bleach. Its formulation is safe enough to leave on overnight and  can be applied several times per day.
✨ Our Smile Pop Aligner Cleansing & Whitening Foam has the least amount of bleach and can be applied daily and does not have to be removed. This product is recommended more for keeping your aligners or retainers bright as opposed to maximizing your teeth whiteness.

What is your best whitening product?

Our Smile Pop Premium Teeth Whitening Kit contains our highest concentration of carbamide peroxide teeth bleaching gel which will give you the fastest, strongest result of all of our products. We recommend removing the gel off of your teeth after 15 minutes for best effectiveness and no sensitivity.

What is the difference between your gel syringes and the whitening kit?

Our Smile Pop Premium Teeth Whitening Kit has our strongest concentration of take-home bleach, an LED activator light and is recommended for those who want our biggest boost of white. The kit is also great if you do not have any existing whitening trays, clear aligners, or retainers to apply the gel into as you can apply the gel directly onto the light.
Our Smile Pop Premium Teeth Whitening Gel Syringes has a slightly lower concentration of take-home bleach and does not come with an LED activator light. If you have clear aligners, retainers, or an existing LED activator light, you can apply the gel directly into those to help whiten.
We recommend applying both types of bleach for no more than 15 minutes.

Are Smile Pop teeth whitening products safe?

All Smile Pop products use a safe and tested strength of carbamide peroxide to effectively whiten your teeth.

Are your products tested on animals?

Our Smile Pop teeth whitening product line is something to write home about! Not only is the product cruelty free and vegan, it’s also gluten-free, sugar-free, and non-GMO.

Do you have any instructional videos I can watch to make sure I'm doing this right?

Oh yeah! Check out our how-to videos HERE or learn even more from Dr. Courtney’s YouTube channel HERE.

Will my teeth hurt after whitening?

If you follow the directions written on the boxes of each product, you should experience minimal to no sensitivity. If mild sensitivity to hot or cold liquids occurs, it usually resolves within 1-2 days.

Do I keep the gel on my teeth overnight?

Nope. Our gels are formulated to remain on your teeth for no longer than 15 minutes. If you sleep with the gel on your teeth, you risk dehydrating your tooth enamel and having sensitivity for 1-2 days. Don’t do it!

✨ PRO TIP: Apply the teeth whitening gel on your teeth just before you get into the shower and then rinse once you’re done. Two birds, one stone!

I have Invisalign attachments. Which products can I use?

You can use our Smile Pop Teeth Whitening Pens and our Smile Pop Aligner Cleansing and Whitening Foam daily to maintain your white. If you want to safely raise your boost of white, we recommend using the Smile Pop Premium Teeth Whitening Gels only 1-2 times per week.

I have braces. Which products can I use?

You can safely use our Smile Pop Aligner Cleansing and Whitening Foam daily as it contains a mild amount of toothpaste and peroxide to keep your appliances clean.

If I don't have Invisalign, can I still use the teeth whitening pen?

Heck yes! Our Smile Pop Teeth Whitening Pens are designed to be used on-the-go. For best results, we recommend no eating or drinking for 30 minutes after application. If you do happen to have Invisalign, apply the pen on your teeth prior to inserting your clear aligners for a safe and easy way to whiten.

If I don't have Invisalign, can I still use the aligner foam?

Definitely! The Smile Pop Aligner Cleansing & Whitening Foam was made to be used on your retainers or existing teeth whitening trays. Its special formula contains toothpaste and a mild amount of hydrogen peroxide to keep your appliances clean and bright.

How often can I use the teeth whitening gel syringes?

It is safe to use our Smile Pop Premium Teeth Whitening Gel Syringes daily. We recommend no more than 15 minutes each use to minimize sensitivity. If you have attachments on your teeth from orthodontic treatment, we recommend using the gel syringes only 1-2 times per week.

Can my child use your whitening products?

Baby teeth are thinner and more permeable than an adult’s teeth, so if teeth whitening gels are used improperly, teeth and gum sensitivities can result. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAPD), you should not bleach your child’s teeth until all of their baby teeth have fallen out and their permanent teeth have come in. This typically occurs around 12 years of age. Parents should consult their child’s dentist to determine appropriate methods for and the timing of dental whitening.

general questions

Is teeth whitening safe?

Research has confirmed that teeth whitening is not bad for teeth and no enamel damage occurs from normal teeth whitening.

How does teeth whitening work?

Teeth stains are lifted by applying a bleaching gel to the enamel. This gel seeps into the pores within the outer layer of teeth and breaks apart the tiny staining particles that have become lodged in these pores. As the particles disintegrate, more light gets reflected, making teeth look brighter.

What are the active teeth bleaching ingredients?

There are two main teeth whitening ingredients typically used to bleach teeth: hydrogen peroxide (HP) and carbamide peroxide (CP). HP is a powerful, fast-acting whitening agent and we use that in our 30 minute and 60 minute in-office teeth whitening treatments. CP is a slower acting agent, but is equally effective overtime and we use that in our Smile Pop take-home teeth whitening products.

How long does it take to see a result?

Patients can expect to see a brighter smile immediately after an in-office treatment (typically 8 shades whiter). For take-home products, it is recommended to do daily at home treatments for about a week in order to achieve a difference of up to 8 shades brighter (on average). In general, optimal results can be attained in 1-2 weeks, however, severe stains may take longer and multiple treatments to fully resolve.

How many shades will I go up?

This depends on the concentration of peroxide and the duration of treatment. Because the concentration of the in-office teeth whitening bleach is higher than products sold for at-home use, it can penetrate deeper below the surface of the tooth and give you a faster, bigger result. With that said, your can achieve similar whitening effects over time with daily use of our Smile Pop teeth whitening products.

Can I whiten with whitening toothpaste?

Dr. Courtney does not really recommended using whitening toothpaste routinely as this type of toothpaste if very abrasive. It’s like brushing your teeth with sandpaper!  And yes, technically, while the abrasivity of the paste can remove surface stains to help whiten your teeth, long term use can cause thinning of your tooth enamel and more exposure of the inner, yellower layer of your tooth.  Wondering which toothpaste to use? Dr. C personally likes this line of toothpaste.

How long will my teeth stay white for?

Like all things in life, it depends! A diet containing dark-staining food and beverages or habits like smoking can darken your teeth over time. To maintain your desired teeth whiteness, we recommend whitening at least two times per week (once your optimal whiteness is achieved from daily use). Remember – anything that can stain a white T-shirt can stain your teeth!

Does my insurance cover teeth whitening?

Insurance does not typically cover teeth whitening services or products, however you can use your FSA (flex spending accounts) or HSA (health savings accounts) on both our Smile Pop in-office teeth bleaching treatments or Smile Pop teeth whitening products.

Should I get my teeth cleaned before I do the whitening?

Cleaner teeth respond better to teeth whitening as it allows the bleaching gel to better penetrate the pores of the teeth. We say yes, go for it!

Which bleaching treatment lasts longer - an in-office treatment or take home products?

Because the concentration of the in-office teeth whitening bleach is higher than products sold for at-home use, it can penetrate deeper below the surface of the tooth and your teeth will stay whiter, longer. With that said, your can achieve similar whitening effects over time with daily use of our Smile Pop teeth whitening products.

What's the benefit of an in-office treatment vs. a take home product?

The main benefit of an in-office teeth whitening treatment is that the whitening occurs much faster than at-home treatments. At home products often require multiple use over an extended period of time to achieve a similar whiteness.

Teeth bleaching vs. teeth whitening - what's the difference?

Nothing. Both “teeth bleaching” and “teeth whitening” mean the same thing and use some formulation of peroxide to clean out the surface stains of your teeth to help them appear whiter.

Should I whiten my teeth before I get my dental procedures?

If your dental procedures are in the esthetic zone of your smile – definitely! The whiter your natural teeth are, the better color matched your dental restorations will be.

I'm pregnant. Can I still whiten?

Teeth whitening is safe for pregnant women, but it is not recommended. There are currently no studies that show that teeth whitening has negative effects on pregnant women, or on their children. According to the American Pregnancy Association, cosmetic treatments that are not immediately necessary, such as teeth whitening, should be postponed until after delivery. The American Dental Association (ADA) agrees, stating that due to the potential safety concerns regarding bleaching materials, pregnant women should delay any teeth whitening procedures.

Can my child whiten their teeth?

Baby teeth are thinner and more permeable than an adult’s teeth, so if teeth whitening gels are used improperly, teeth and gum sensitivities can result. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAPD), you should not bleach your child’s teeth until all of their baby teeth have fallen out and their permanent teeth have come in. This typically occurs around 12 years of age. Parents should consult their child’s dentist to determine appropriate methods for and the timing of dental whitening.

How soon before my wedding should I whiten?

We recommend doing an in-office teeth whitening 10 days before the big day and continue at-home treatments leading up to the big day.
