They say man plans, God laughs. This is a 60 second clip of our 3+ year journey to become parents (ultimately via surrogacy). Our journey hasn’t been an easy one, but we have met many other people along this journey that make us thankful for the cards we were dealt. Miscarriages, still births, pregnancy loss support groups, you name it. And now, we’ve added surrogacy to the list... and somehow managed to keep it a secret from basically everyone, including our parents! 🤯 After many years of loss, with our biggest one being our baby Bodhi at 23 weeks, we dove head first into the world of surrogacy. A fellow loss mom sent me a NY Times article about a new surrogacy matching “app” called Nodal Health and while we were skeptical at first, it’s how we ultimately found our match. Ironically, a friend of ours worked there so we felt safe enough to try it out. We matched with our angel surrogate less than 2 weeks being on the platform. 🤯 We knew nothing about the world of surrogacy so we enlisted NY Surrogacy Center for their help and support during this journey, too. Looking back, the surrogacy world isn’t as scary as it may seem. It took 15 months from the time we matched with our surrogate to the transfer of our embryo with Neway Fertility to the birth of our beautiful baby boy and we have learned so much that we are willing to share with the world. Mom - sorry we didn’t tell you! 😜 To my amazing Smile Pop NYC team - thank you for all of your hard word these past few years to allow me to slip down for appointments, keep my practice up and running, and continuing to share smiles with the world. Picture this: You really dislike your smile. Every time you watch one of your Instagram stories or TikToks you cringe. Ick - THAT ONE FRIGGIN’ TOOTH just looks terrible. Here’s the new amazing thing - for the past year, I have been a part of a pilot program testing out Invisalign software that helps visualize your smile in a VIDEO. Not just a still photo. But literally how your teeth would look when you giggle in front of that cute guy you’ve been seeing. Or how your teeth would look when you give a speech at your best friends wedding. ☺️ The future is here people and it’s amazing. It’s a great communication tool for doctoros to show their patients what the art of the possible is. When I see your teeth for the first time, I can already see the potential of what I can do. But now, they can, too. TBH, I have been dying to share this cool technology with everyone - the ClinCheck Smile View - and now I finally can. Now here’s the real bread and butter of it all - yes, you can show a patient their new smile. But what’s even cooler, is when a doctor is treatment planning, you can see the negative effects on a smile if you do the wrong type of movement (ie: flattening of a smile arc). The biggest privilege of being an orthodontist is the the positive impact I get to make in my patients’ lives. Their self-esteem goes ↗️, their quality of life goes ↗️ and their smiles become 🔥. The MAIN reason I became an orthodontist: 1️⃣ I wanted to make other people feel as awesome as my own orthodontist made me feel every time he saw me. And some OTHER amazing reasons to become an orthdontist that I learned later in life: 2️⃣ You get to be sciency and nerdy. As an orthodontist, I have to think about physics every day. #nerdalert 3️⃣ I get to see the positive results of my work. You see a smile improve and you see the confidence in the patient improve, too. 4️⃣ You get to be creative. There are so many ways to treat certain cases and I get to use many tools in my toolbox. 5️⃣ You can keep food on the table. 6️⃣ The relationships I get to have with my patients. I have made many friends who were once patients, and I even married one! 7️⃣ The work-life balance is what keeps me sane these days. ☺️ It’s very hard to run your own practice, but the time I get to step out and recharge so I can be ON when I am at work in my practice is very important for me. This energy that I have that every loves doesn’t “just happen.” ☺️ 8️⃣ I’m always learning and improving and evovling as technology changes, more studies on the human body are done, and life evolves. 9️⃣ You can decide to work for yourself. Or you can also work for someone else. The job is in high demand. 🔟 It is so much fun! Being your own boss and running your own business is Hard (with a capital H)! There’s no one to keep you in check… 😜 But one of the amazing benefits of being your own boss is setting your own schedule along with your own intentions. I work on my Smile Pop brand and business 7 days per week and I love it. Some days that’s with patients, other days it is not and it’s up to me to set the balance based on what I need in that season of my life. In this particular season of my life, I have the time, the resources, and the energy to go go go! So how do I make all this happen while running what I consider to be an amazing, fun, and one of kind practice @smilepopnyc in New York City, the city that never sleeps? 1️⃣ I plan my clinic schedule 6-9 months in advance. If there’s a weekend where there’s even a ✨slight✨ chance we might take a trip, I put it on the calendar. It’s much easier to open clinical days than shut them down. 2️⃣ Because my clinical team members are in school, we have modified our schedule to see patients in the chunky middle of the week, with the bulk of our patients being scheduled Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Mondays are lighter patient day, which means it’s easier for me if I need to “call in sick” 🙃 if we just so happen to get dumped ❄️ on and need to ski an extra day! 4️⃣ I stopped seeing patients on Fridays after COVID. A lot of my patients had “summer Fridays” or didn’t have to go into the office so I thought, “Why not me?” Best decision I’ve ever made (after marrying the love of my life! 🥰) 4️⃣ I’m a big fan of NTW - No Time Wasted. That means I’ll normally have my laptop with me whenever I go so that if I have to wait somewhere or there are delays, I can catch up on some treatment plans and other things on my to-do list. This statement👆is said by many patients, so much so that I sometimes hesitate to show Invisalign Clinchecks with a patient. So let’s break it down… What is a ClinCheck? It’s a software used by Invislign where orthodontists can treatment plan the movement of teeth by using a 3D model of the patient’s teeth. This 3D model is used to visualize the forces programmed in each aliger in the treatment, with each aligner designed to apply specific forces to the teeth to achieve these movements gradually. And what is NOT a ClinCheck? A ClinCheck is NOT the actual movement of your teeth. The ClinCheck software helps in planning and visualizing the treatment, but it does NOT display the actual biomechanical forces applied during the process. A ClinCheck does NOT factor in the bone, gum tissue, soft tissues, and all other biological limitation and factors that influence how teeth can move, where teeth can move, how stable movements are, and what the limitations are. It’s importatne to set expectations during treatment so that when a patient “see’s their teeth,” they understand that they are not comparing apples to apples, they are not seeing the movement that will happen, but rather the forces that are programmed in each stage of the aligner. So why bother showing the ClinCheck to patients? “Don’t take the short cut.” “Don’t fly to a foreign country and get all of your healthy enamel cut down and slap veneers on them.” “Nothing is as good as your healthy tooth enamel.” These 👆 are all legit things I have said to this patient who, when I first met him, told me he was going to fly down to Columbia to get veneers on all of his teeth.
